Whoo Hoo - Launch Week!

Our final list of to do's are being worked on this week in anticipation of our launch on Thursday. Thanks for your comments and for your patience during this process. We hope you will enjoy using the new website and the features it provides.

Even as we prepare to launch, we are asking ourselves questions about how you use the library ~ specifically recently ordered materials. We are going to some of the computer classes to ask patrons about recently ordered. If you would like to participate, the questions are provided below.

1. Do you use the "Featured Lists of recently ordered items" in our catalog?
If no, how do you find items to place on hold?

2. How would you like to be able to view recently ordered/new materials?
Newest first
Alphabetically by title
Alphabetically by author
Format
Genre
Subject
Reading level
Other
3. What information would you like to see about each item in a recently ordered list?
Title
Author/actor/artist
Ratings/reading level
Tags

Summary
Other?
4. How often would you like the new material lists to be updated?

5. Is there any other information you'd like to tell us about finding/viewing recently ordered or coming soon library materials?

When I request a book from the library district, I would love to see where I am in the queue to receive a book. I'll order a book, and sometimes I get the book right away, or the wait is longer. I have no way of estimating when the book will arrive.

I would love to see the on order section updated as orders are placed similar to what happens with the Denver Public Library web site.

I use the Recently Ordered lists, Publishers Weekly reviews, and NY Times Book Review to identify books to place on hold. Your new web site "Recently Ordered" list does not provide enough information to identify books that one may want to read, as it pretty much just has the book title. You need to be adding the author, the publisher, the anticipated date of publication, the book jacket, a summary of the book, and the Publishers Weekly review. I am pleased that you are making the Classic Lists available, assuming of course, that the Classic Lists will have all of the above-listed information available. The search mechanism is not as important (although alphabetical is preferred). It would be nice if you would separate fiction from non-fiction.

In reply to the first comment about how long the wait might be to receive an item on hold.......

That is a difficult question to answer. The rough math says you can take the number of copies and divide it by the number of holds and divide by 3 (3 weeks if its a book title). Things we don't know are whether titles will be returned early or late. The other option is to look in your account where you can see your standing or number in the hold list. Hope this helps!

Regarding the order section updates as orders are placed ~ we now have that option with the Recently Ordered links you can find in the Books, Movies and Music tabs in their respective Browse boxes. These lists are pulling the newly ordered items in list fashion and are updated weekly.

In reply to Anonymous comment 3 ~ thank you for your input about where you find titles to place on hold. You are right in that our Recently Ordered list does not provide very much information. We are working from just the order record and don't have book jacket and summary information until later in the ordering process. When professional reviews are created and provided by our vendor, they can be found in the item detail under the View Extras link. Thanks for your input!

I am completely lost now trying to find new movies you have ordered. Before I had no problem. Now under the recently ordered 'Movies' I have no clue what you are showing me.

So I will answer your questioner as follows

1. Do you use the "Featured Lists of recently ordered items" in our catalog?

Yes, it least every month. but have always wondered why when I request an item, may times I will be 300 or 400 on the list. Are some patrons allowed to request a hold before the list is published????

Would it be possible to be sent an email when a movie is ordered?

2. How would you like to be able to view recently ordered/new materials?
Newest first
Alphabetically by title
Alphabetically by author
Format
Genre
Subject
Reading level
Other

Newest first and possibly by a rating.

3. What information would you like to see about each item in a recently ordered list?
Title
Author/actor/artist
Ratings/reading level
Tags
Availability
Summary
Other?

For Movies - Title and would be great if you could add on the rating of the movie as will as a synopsis.

4. How often would you like the new material lists to be updated?

Probably every two weeks but once a month is also just fine.

5. Is there any other information you'd like to tell us about finding/viewing recently ordered or coming soon library materials?

Yes, why are so many movies ordered that have no redeeming quality???? Should there be some minimum standard rating applied before a movie is ordered?

I do appreciate being able to get movies from the Library.

Thank you, DeWayne Drummond

additional comment.
I just tried the 'Classical list' and when I clicked on it for movies, it did not look like anything I am used to. Had all DVD ordered and not in the format I am used to seeing for movies.

DeWayne D~
We order a variety of movies, based on patrons’ interests in our different communities and also based on reviews. Not all movies will appeal to all viewers and we make an attempt to offer materials for all our different patrons, in our selection of movies as well as all other formats. The only ratings we apply to our movies are the standard ratings used by the Motion Picture Association of America. Since all movies are not rated such as documentaries, non-fiction films, and foreign films, these titles are selected by subject matter, publisher, and reviews. We are always interested in hearing from our patrons regarding what they want, and I would recommend using the “Can’t Find It form” on the website, if you have suggestions for titles that we don’t currently offer.

Hi Cynthia k

you answered exactly as I expected about the quality of some of the movies that are ordered but I still believe that our tax paper dollars are being wasted on some absolutely terrible movies and some minimum requirement should be meat before a movie is ordered.

You did not response to my other issues about the new revised way of showing recently ordered movies. Would appreciate if you would respond to my previous questions.

Is anything being done to give us a way to search for movies that is as good, if not better than the old way?? Classic list does not show the old way - Now May and no list for April???
Thanks, DeWayne

DeWayne D said...

Oops,
make that met, not meat in my previous post.

DeWayne,

Sorry if I did not get to your other question about revised ways to show recently ordered. We are working this week on making changes to the website so keep a lookout!

The Classic list should be updated this week to show April movies.

If you are used to searching for movies in the classic catalog, feel free to use this same tool. In the drop down search box, you can choose Classic Catalog.

I hope this addresses your questions, thx for asking!

Cynthia

ok, thanks, I'm sure there will be improvements. Assuming images will be back and some info about the movie.

I'm sorry, I should really proofread what I type. Tax payer not tax paper.
